RefreshMiami May 2007 meetup

Flickr photoset here.

We had a great meetup last night with over 30 participants at the University of Miami’s School of Communication. Notably, the folks from Agency.net AgencyNet.com in Ft. Lauderdale attended for the first time, thanks to Dan Rubin. Hopefully we’ll see more folks from Broward and perhaps we can hold some meetups there as well.

Michael Montgomery spoke to us about “Web Standards for Skeptics” and the advantages of separating content, style and behavior when creating web sites. Rather than summarizing his speech, here’s a link to Michael’s presentation, which he placed online using … web standards!

While responding to a question, Michael referred to an article he’d written on “Copyright Primer for Designers“.

Upcoming stuff:

  • We’re looking for a speaker for our next event on June 20th, so please get in touch with us if you’d like to present.
  • Monica is setting up a team for us at the miami sports & social club, to participate in their recreational dodgeball league on south beach on saturdays at 11am. It starts may 26th, and $75 gets you a team shirt and 7 regular season games, plus tournament games for qualifying teams. Follow this link if you’d like to take part.
  • As a reminder, we have DemoCampMiami in September, please reserve your place if you’d like to present, there are only 2 spots left. You’ll need a password to edit the wiki, it is c4mp.
  • Finally, as a shameless plug, I’ll be giving a course at UM in Fall’07, #CVJ596, on “online expression, community building and citizen journalism“. If you’re a student and interested, you may contact me for more information.
  • Anyone up for an informal RefreshMiami in a couple of weeks?
